Spirit of the Day

the concern within my eyes –
twilight assumes as its own,
my faith breathes.
gone is nearly today, as dust billows
life continues, work sets the pace
the echoes of yesterday
further behind, as tomorrow
eagery awaits.
Cicadas joyful within the trees,
remembering to honor those
before the sun sets,
pups howl against the breeze.
Light, use your glow,
dusk determines goodnight –
we’ll pause – alongside the tea kettle.
The future, only God knows, yet I whisper ideas as
the spirit of the day settles.

Because of You

My desire to write poetry,
has been affected by your presence,
the same fevered passion exists
yet, its been reduced to your name
maybe even a letter in the end
my muse, this pandora’s box, the new beginning and my end is with you.

So come the rushing waters of what might one day be,
bring on the swirls of passionate winds,
stretch the legs of workers in the trenches of this world,
my love breathes in these,
i am because of you.

Notice

Don’t bother comparing us,
Simply won’t do,
We share similar parts,
But totally different hues.
Sensing your internal struggle,
Trying to decide between two,
Confessing to you now,
She’s finding her way back to you.
Knowing your confidence all too well,
I’ll offer, what I know to be true,
I prefer to continue alone,
If she still owns any part of you.

Carefree

Tuttle Creek, spring semester
Convinced and finally alone,
The promise of happily ever after
With the help of a seductive cove.

Clothes drapped over fringe
Growth no higher than our knees
As summer promised a convenient hinge
And tree buds blossomed into leaves.

Warm air cradled doubt
While we dipped and slid with haste
A runner’s legs supported me
Mine, wrapped around his waist.

Water clutching nature
Connecting, skin to skin
Laughter echoed pleasure
I want to feel that way again.

Reality

There, if you listen surely

You will hear a siren’s song for mercy

The tone as mesmerizing as she is

It will cause you to question this reality

Her reality, and

The reality of those who do not hear her.

You’ll wonder

Who is the chosen one?

He who hears, understands the song and watches over her,

Or the others who are blessed with the ability to move along, oblivious?

Might it be them.

No battle sworn into, not fated through the sea, nor deprived of who she really is…

For eternity.

With or Without

She was quiet this morning,
Dawn, that is, miraculous,
Peaceful in her timeless dignity.

Two mallards skim rural water, as twin rogues,
Before taking flight with one another,
Their sky, a season of cerulean.

An ibis flirted with stoic wind,
Hardly noticed and without sound,
As her white wings rode his reliable gift.

Nature thrilled with my insistent watchful probe,
Created a warm glow from the rising sun,
Behind clouds, the color of smoke.

In the end, my eyes focused,
On a spider crawling about her web,
Intricate designer, naked to most.

Her long legs seemingly stretched across,
Compressed air, as I questioned myself, almost,
But, chose to alter my angle, instead.

Life reassured me, artistry brought into focus,
Minutes passed, comfort took hold,
As I found you there, too.

How do I know?
Alone, I briefly turned and whispered in awe,
“You’re seeing this, aren’t you?”

Hood replaced reluctantly, closed tight
Gloved hands situated
Into warm inviting pockets
I continue amongst what’s frozen

Admitting My Failure (Haibun)

Today would have been my 19th wedding anniversary. Next month marks a year since the divorce was final.

All that keeps running through my mind is how big the lawyer’s office was, as I sat alone on one side of the conference table, while he and his lawyer sat on the other. I stared out the windows and silently begged to be told to jump. I was alone in there and naive enough to believe I wasn’t on my own. Still wanting to trust.

Why wouldn’t I reflect on our wedding day? I guess it’s because I don’t want to admit the truth to myself. I knew then he wasn’t built to handle me, but I expected him to be, so it wasn’t his fault he failed.

Always tough enough

Never really prepared

Protection required

Walk With Me

I recently submitted my poem for Michael and Neha’s #PoetsForPeace project. I thought I would share it here, as well.

Thank you for asking me to be a part of your global outcry, for giving poet’s a place for communion and for believing in the fact that words have power.

May this campaign bare fruit universally.

Blessings to you both,

Audrey Dawn

Walk with me

With purpose

We shall not walk alone

Walk with me

Beside me

There is nowhere else

To go

Walk with me

Eyes forward

See what I see

Walk with me

Beside me

There is nowhere else

To go

Walk with me

Please

I crave peace within

Walk with me

Beside me

There is nowhere else

To go

Walk with me

And feel my hand

In vision those to come

Walk with me

Beside me

There is nowhere else

To go

Walk with me

United

Our touch remains the same

Walk with me

Beside me

There is nowhere else

To go

Walk with me

Be mindful

Our burdens not the same

Walk with me

Beside me

There is nowhere else

To go

Walk with me

We’ll listen

Hearts open wide

Walk with me

Beside me

There is nowhere else

To go
